Shockwave Therapy — Foot Pain Treatment in Perth

If you’re experiencing persistent foot, heel or tendon pain that has not fully resolved with standard treatments, Shockwave Therapy (also called ESWT) may be part of the right solution for you. At Footcare Scotland, we always focus first on comprehensive assessment and conservative care, using shockwave therapy only when evidence suggests it’s likely to help accelerate healing and improve pain relief.

Our aim is to find the most effective and appropriate treatment plan for you, combining rehabilitation, load management, footwear advice and shockwave therapy where indicated to support tissue healing, improve function and reduce long-term symptoms.

What Is Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave Therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive, clinic-based treatment that uses targeted acoustic waves to stimulate your body’s natural healing processes.

These sound waves are delivered through the skin by a handheld applicator to the area of pain or tissue irritation. The mechanical energy increases blood flow, breaks down scar or fibrous tissue, and encourages tissue regeneration at a cellular level.

Unlike surgical procedures, shockwave does not require incisions, and most patients are able to return to normal activities shortly after treatment.

Conditions Shockwave Therapy Can Help With

Shockwave Therapy is most commonly used in conditions where conservative treatments have plateaued or long-standing symptoms persist, such as:

  • Plantar fasciitis (persistent heel pain)

  • Achilles tendinopathy & tendon pain

  • Chronic soft tissue irritation

  • Tendon-related lower limb pain

These conditions often start with factors like repetitive strain and increased biomechanical stress Shockwave can be a useful adjunct when pain persists despite rehabilitation and conservative care.

When Do We Consider Shockwave Therapy?

Shockwave therapy isn’t always the first step. We typically recommend it when:

  • You have had a comprehensive assessment and other evidence-based conservative treatments (exercise, activity modification, orthotics, manual care) have been tried without adequate improvement.

  • Pain or dysfunction has been present for weeks or months and is limiting daily activities or sport.

  • Your clinician identifies that targeted biological stimulation may help promote healing where older tissue changes are preventing recovery.

If shockwave therapy isn’t appropriate, we’ll explain why and recommend other options to help you progress toward your goals.

How Does Shockwave Therapy Work?

Shockwave Therapy delivers controlled mechanical sound waves to the painful area. These waves create a small, targeted micro-injury response that:

  • Stimulates increased blood flow to support healing

  • Promotes tissue regeneration and collagen formation

  • Breaks down scar tissue and adhesions

  • Encourages an anti-inflammatory response over time

A typical course usually requires 3–6 weekly sessions, and many people begin to notice improvements in pain and function after a few treatments.

What to Expect During Treatment

Before Treatment
You’ll have a detailed history and examination to confirm the source of symptoms, discuss goals, and make sure shockwave is an appropriate part of your plan.

During Therapy
A clear gel is applied and the shockwave applicator delivers energy pulses to the treatment area.

  • Sessions typically last 15 minutes.

  • Most patients describe mild to moderate discomfort that is tolerable and short-lived.

After Treatment
You can usually return to daily activities right away, though high-impact activity might be eased off for 24–48 hours as recommended. Some mild redness, tenderness or bruising can occur but typically resolves quickly.

Are There Any Risks or Contraindications?

Shockwave Therapy is generally safe, but as with any procedure, some people might experience:

  • Mild soreness, redness, or swelling after treatment

  • Temporary numbness or tenderness (rare)

There are situations where shockwave may not be suitable, including certain medical conditions, areas of infection, recent steroid injections, or pregnancy. Your clinician will discuss all of this before treatment.

At your first visit, a thorough history and examination of your issue will be carried out. This would be charged at our normal assessment fee.  If Shockwave therapy is appropriate, you will be given pre-treatment information and your sessions will be booked.

Should your Podiatrist feel Shockwave Therapy is not appropriate for your condition, this will be explained and alternative treatments will be recommended.
