Are corns making walking painful?
Corns are small areas of thickened skin that usually develop on the tops and sides of toes, or on the sole of the foot and are caused by excessive friction or pressure. The most common cause of corns is wearing shoes that fit badly. If your shoes are too tight, they will place pressure around the toes and place excessive pressure on the toes; your body’s natural defence mechanism for this is to produce hard skin to protect the area. If this excessive pressure is not removed the hard skin will continue to develop and form into a painful corn. However, corns will also commonly form over foot deformities such as bunions and hammer toes.
Follow our simple tips to reduce the pain of your corn:
- Buy shoes that fit! This is the most simple and effective treatment for corns. If your shoes fit you properly, you will not develop corns.
- Wear socks made from natural fibres. This will reduce the friction between the sock and your foot.
- Moisturise your feet daily. Keeping your skin in good condition will reduce the chances of you developing a corn. There are special foot creams available such as CCS Footcare Cream and Flexitol.
- Do not use corn plasters. Corn plasters contain a strong acid that will damage your skin.
- See an HCPC registered Podiatrist. They will safely and painlessly remove the corn and advise you on how best to avoid them in the future.
- Special medical insoles, called orthoses, can be effective in reducing the excess pressure that causes corns. These fit inside your shoes to reduce the pain of a corn.
